Harry Potter Quidditch Champions release date, game modes, and more

Grab your broom and wizard hat, it’s time to take on the best teams as the Harry Potter Quidditch Champions release date draws closer.

Want to know the Harry Potter Quidditch Champions release date? There’s been quite a bit of confusion about this game as Quidditch was rumored to be part of Hogwarts Legacy, but it appears the sport was cut from the RPG. Quidditch is referenced in Hogwarts Legacy in a teacher’s note with redactions, stating Professor Phineas Black was to blame for the sport being put on hold at Hogwarts.

Instead, Unbroken Studios has been working on a standalone Quidditch sports game that features the bells and whistles you might expect from an annualized series. As the name implies, Harry Potter Quidditch Champions takes place during The Boy Who Lived’s school years, meaning we might get a chance to take on Harry’s Inter-House Cup winning Gryffindor team.

Harry Potter Quidditch Champions release date

Harry Potter Quidditch Champions launches on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, as confirmed by the official trailer released by Warner Bros Games on July 29, 2024. The game will launch on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.

Warner Bros Games first revealed Harry Potter Quidditch Champions back in April 2023 on X (formerly known as Twitter), along with a limited playtest sign up. The playtests have been going on for almost a year to ensure the developers can fine tune the gameplay, as well as make any changes to the netcode.

Though Quidditch Champions features career and multiplayer modes, it’s being priced at $29.99 / £24.99, half the going rate for a regular game release. There’s also a Deluxe Edition for $39.99 / £34.99 that includes the Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Slytherin, Ravenclaw House Pack, and 2,000 Gold to spend on items to customize your avatar.

Harry Potter Quidditch Champions game modes

The four Quidditch Champions game modes are:

  • Career
  • Exhibition
  • Open Practice
  • Multiplayer

Career Mode

The main single-player content in Quidditch Champions is the career mode, taking players through four Championship Cups. Players can decide to go through this mode on their own, swapping between each of the player roles: Chaser, Beater, Seeker, or Keeper. While you play as one of these roles, your AI teammates will help lead the line for you as you look to score some points. You also have the option to play with up to two friends, with each player taking on a role as you battle against the computer.

Here’s a breakdown of each of the Championship Cups in Quidditch Champions:

  • Burrow Cup – learn the basics of flight and the importance of positioning, while earning yourself a trophy in the process.
  • Hogwarts House Cup – become the pride of your house as you compete to become the best team at Hogwarts.
  • Triwizard Cup – you’re the best at your school, now it’s time to challenge rival academies to become the undisputed champions.
  • World Cup – Quidditch goes global as you face off against the world’s best players.

As you progress through your career, your character earns skill points that can be used to unlock special moves and improve your overall stats. Depending on what position you enjoy playing, your skill points can be spent on upgrading your main abilities. For example, if you’re a Chaser, you’ll want to improve your tackles to get the ball from your opponents. Likewise, a Seeker will want to spend skill points to boost their energy, letting them travel faster and further than before. Your broom also affects your stats, so it’s important to pick one that suits you with the right mix of stats across Speed, Durability, and Agility.

Exhibition Mode

Exhibition mode lets you set up custom Quidditch scenarios that can be played solo or in co-op versus bots. To unlock teams and maps, you need to go through the career mode and experience them first. It’s unclear whether you have to win the cup to unlock everything in exhibition mode, but it’s likely that you will.

You can pick the teams for each side, ranging from House teams like Hogwarts, Beauxbaton, and Durmstrang, to international teams like the United Kingdom and United States. If you want to set up a scenario where your Hogwarts side dukes it out against Viktor Krum’s Bulgarian team, there’s nothing stopping you from doing so. There’s also the option to pick from 11 maps, including multiple versions of Hogwarts going through several weather states like snow and rain. Finally, there are five difficulty modes to pick from, ranging from casual to expert level.

Open Practice

Use the open practice mode to test your abilities before jumping into multiplayer. This will give you an opportunity to break in your broom, so to speak, allowing you to fly around an open arena to understand your surroundings and physical limits. It’s also worth trying out each of the positions so you can work out which role you’d like to play online. Don’t get stuck playing as a Keeper when deep down you know you’d rather be a Seeker.

Multiplayer

Finally, there’s the multiplayer mode, where you can choose to go it alone or play with up to two other human players. The first team that manages to reach 100 points wins the game. Despite featuring six players on each team, multiplayer matches feature 3v3 human players, so you’ll always be matched up with and against other people.

As a result of the 6v6 team composition, players are forced to pick which roles they’d like to control. The roles are split up into three combinations: Chaser/Keeper, Chaser/Beater, and Chaser/Seeker. You’re able to swap between the two roles during the game, with a bot taking over for you when you decide to switch roles.

Quidditch Champions features crossplay across all the platforms it’s playable on, so you don’t have to worry about your platform’s player base.

Harry Potter Quidditch Champions customization

You have the opportunity to customize not only your avatar and Hero characters like Harry Potter and Cedric Diggory, but also the other five members of your team. Hero characters can be altered with pre-defined alternative outfits, whereas player-created avatars have considerably more customization options.

Here are all the ways you can customize characters in Quidditch Champions:

  • Outfits
  • Hairstyles and color
  • Body types
  • Emotes
  • Personal Insignias
  • Broom trails
  • Victory celebrations

Certain unlockable customization options require Winged Keys to access locked items in The Vault, and you can obtain these keys by completing daily and weekly challenges. There are also career challenges, some of which unlock Gold which can be spent on cosmetics.

The creator of the Harry Potter series, JK Rowling, has made a number of transphobic remarks on social media in recent years. Warner Bros. has the license to make games based on Harry Potter. While the details of that deal aren’t publicly known, and WB Games says “J.K. Rowling is not directly involved in the creation of the game”, it is likely that, as the creator and owner of the Harry Potter IP, she will earn royalties from its sales.
