49ers need an urgent comeback: 3 players to watch

The San Francisco 49ers need a win this weekend against the Los Angeles Rams. The team lost two games in a row and was destroyed by injuries on defense. After losing 44-23 to the Kansas City Chiefs, the 49ers need to find the momentum they lacked. This will be the second meeting between the NFC West Rivals this year and both will be pushing for a win. Here are three players the 49ers need to step up to win.

The 49ers need Talanoa Hufanga

49ers safety, Talanoa Hufanga has been a star for this San Francisco team so far this 2022 season. Despite his strong defense and strength, they played very poorly against the Chiefs last weekend. Hufanga is a key player the 49ers need to strengthen before they face the Rams.

This season

Despite sustaining a concussion in Week 6 against the Atlanta Falcons, Hufanga has started every game this season. In just seven games, the sophomore safety has three interceptions and a touchdown. His touchdown came on pick six against the LA Rams in Week 4. The more turnovers the better and it would be good for the team if Hufanga could get another interception this week.

Hufanga also has six pass deflections, according to Pro Football Reference. This is an important stat for Hufanga to increase due to a large number of injuries in San Francisco’s high school. It will also help not to allow opponents to gain too many yards. The safety also has 40 combined tackles, 29 solo, including five tackles for loss and one quarterback hit. Tackles for the loss have been his best assist for this team and a big factor in why opposing teams have to kick so often. 49ers need Hufanga to force multiple tackles for loss this weekend to help keep Rams offense off the field

VS Chiefs

Last weekend, Hufanga forced an interception thrown by Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. This created initial momentum for the defense; however, this did not last long. According to ESPN, Hufanga had four total tackles, two solo, against the Chiefs and one pass deflection. As Hufanga’s big season, he missed numerous tackles that allowed Kansas City to gain too many yards. Getting the tackles he missed last week will be crucial for Hufanga, especially with a win over the Rams that the 49ers need.

Whether fans like quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo or not, he’s the starter for the San Francisco 49ers. As long as Garoppolo doesn’t give up any turnovers, the 49ers should be okay against the Rams. It’s important to the team that Garoppolo remains consistent this weekend against Los Angeles.

This season

This season has been very eventful for Garoppolo. He started on the bench and came into week two with a win. He had horrible safety against the Broncos and a costly interception against the Chiefs. It’s the avoidable mistakes that have cost San Francisco so much. The 49ers need to beat the Rams this weekend, and fixing the mistakes will help the team a lot.

According to Pro Football Reference, Garoppolo completed 119 of 185 pass attempts for 1,456 yards. He only threw four interceptions, but they were expensive. There was an interception thrown against the Atlanta Falcons that can be excused. It was late in the first half when he took a down shot trying to get something at the last second. Garoppolo also has just nine touchdowns this season that will need to improve. With the addition of another star to the roster, there should be no reason for the 49ers not to score more points.

VS Chiefs

When the 49ers played the Chiefs in Week 7, Garoppolo completed 25 of 37 passes for 303 yards according to ESPN. He threw an interception where he tried to force a pass to George Kittle, instead of taking a sack or throwing the ball away. This week against the Rams, his decision-making will need to be better. What turned into a turnover could have been a goal play on the next down, even if it was just a field goal.

Star running back Christian McCaffrey was traded to the San Francisco 49ers on October 20. He flew to Santa Clara on Friday the 21st and still played against the Chiefs the following Sunday. Who was the other team that tried to make the trade for McCaffrey? Los Angeles Rams. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday that McCaffrey will have the full playbook this weekend against the Rams.

This season

McCaffrey has played all seven weeks this season so far. According to Pro Football Reference, McCaffrey has 93 carries for 431 yards. He also has 35 receptions for 301 yards. This includes the seventh week with San Francisco. McCaffrey received many runs with the Carolina Panthers and it should be noted that he might not get that many touches with the 49ers. It could be a good thing for the team and the fantasy folks, though. He will be the main running back, but there will be potentially fewer injuries.

The 49ers offensive weapons available to Garoppolo are now George Kittle, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, Christian McCaffrey and Kyle Juszczyk. That doesn’t include Jeff WIlson Jr, who will still get reps at running back, and Elijah Mitchell when he returns from injury. McCaffrey is known to get injured every year. While injuries are a huge problem on the 49ers, McCaffrey probably won’t be hit as many times as he was in Carolina. The 49ers need to use all of their weapons and that will help them win more games.

VS Chiefs

According to ESPN, McCaffrey only had eight carries but for 38 yards against the Kansas City Chiefs. His longest rush was 12 yards, averaging 4.8 yards per carry. McCaffrey also had two receptions for 24 yards. One play we haven’t seen often this season by the 49ers is a quick pass to the outside. Maybe with McCaffrey it will show more and the team can focus on yards after the catch. Just eight rushed attempts to be on the team for three days is understandable. Now that he’s been around a long time, McCaffrey is a player to watch as the 49ers need a win over the Rams this weekend.

The San Francisco 49ers need a win this weekend and will face the LA Rams at SoFi Stadium this Sunday.
